After leaving the Marvells in 1992, I was tired of living out of a suitcase and decided to take a break from the road.  I landed permanently in Memphis, TN.  A few months later a sound engineer from the past mentioned there was a new group in town from Birmingham, AL.  He told me they had great "original" material but were in dire need of a lead vocalist.  In our conversations he also mentioned that the guys were pretty young (between the ages of 16 and 21) but to not let that fool me.  My plan was to take a break from music all together and I certainly couldn't vision myself in an under-aged band.  Plus, I was thinking they were probably very musically inexperienced.  After several phone calls and many persuasions, I finally decided to show up for one of their rehearsals.  I listened to a couple of their tunes and all I kept thinking was "When can we get started?"

The name of the group was Midnight Rain.  The members were Matt Slocomb-Keys, Joe Evans-Bass, Allen Otts-Guitar, Dylan Proctor-Drums and Marcus "Tex"-Sax.  Most of the guys went to school at The Alabama School Of Performing Arts and two members met while attending Berkley, which explained why they were so skilled at their instruments.  They wrote and arranged all of their music which could take you from a state of melancholy to high energy, groove madness.  I loved every minute of working with these guys.  The ride was brief and a real shame when the group parted ways.  I hope you guys are still out there jammin' somewhere (smile).

I have very few photos and limited audio of the band.  Though the audio is worn and has been transferred from cassette tape, It's still worth preserving.
